I bought this because my iPhone 5 microphone stopped working when taking videos. The microphones work for all other functions, except for this. Wasn't sure if it would be a quick fix for this problem, but it works great! When I want to record a video, I plug it in and then take it out when I'm done. You can also leave it plugged in, but not all the way, and it will not cut out the speakers for phone calls and such.
