Speaker Wire 12AWG CL2 Rated 2-Conductor Loud Cable (For In-Wall Installation) (4 lengths)-Monoprice
I have purchased and installed 400 feet of Monoprice CL2 12AWG 2 conductor speaker cable, with purchases of 250 , 100 and 50 foot lengths. Recently I relocated my audio stand and the existing installed cables for one set of speakers was too short. The 12 AWG cables were more difficult to pull out than install, while I was examining the scuffed outer jacket I was running my hands along the cable and following the spiralling inner conductors along that area. There was a difference in how the inner conductors felt and there was an area where the cable felt more rigid. I thought there was a break in one of the inner conductors and checked for continuity with the volt meter, it showed continuity. Not satisfied I cut open the affected area and found the black and red conductor were spliced 6 inches apart, soldered and covered with heat shrink. Cut the heat shrink on the black conductor and found many severed copper strands, oxidization on the exposed copper and a sloppy soldered connection. That explained why the inner conductor felt different in diameter and was more rigid in this area. I ran my hands with cotton work gloves up and down the pulled cable and all felt good, the balance of about 340 feet of installed cable, I have no idea on the status of any other splices there. No more Monoprice CL2 rated wire for me. Questionable manufacturing and quality control.
