its throughput doesn't seem to match the description - may be my unit was defective

Good value but if I plug in 3 devices one doesn't charge. Perhaps the draw is too much..

I have used this now for a month or two. It's nowhere near the charger the iPad comes with IMO. I have tried different cables etc... and all three ports and from the documentation that comes from the web page - I guess it's the top one that is 2.1? Point is as others have noticed.. your really can't tell. I can charge my iPad in under 2.5hrs from 20% with the Apple branded one, and the adapter will get very warm while it works. This one never gets warm and takes forever to charge an iPad. I ordered a 2nd one just because it is convenient to have the three plugs for the many devices I have that do not require the higher amperage. But still need my 10w or 12w iPad charger to get a charge the iPad in any amount of time.
