The material is soft. Keep in mind, in my experience, these do not get very warm at all. I don't know if mine was defective or if it was intended. Obviously, you don't want to bake your cat, but the heat seemed barely noticeable. It would be a comfortable sleeping pad for cats without the heat, but of course, when you purchase it with having a heated pad in mind, a lack of temperature is a problem.
