5-Watt, 1x8 Guitar Combo Tube Amplifier with Celestion Speaker - Monoprice®
I've only had it a few days, so this is a preliminary review, but all good so far. I'm fairly new to electric guitar, more of an acoustic guy, so my taste in tone is somewhat unrefined, But, this amp sounds great to my ears. I like a clean-ish sound with a bit of dirt, and this amp can do that really well. Yesterday I mic'ed it and played it through the PA in my jamspace and it sounded excellent. It's a fairly crappy PA (lots of caveats in this review!), but still sounded good. Nice full tone. Sounds rich and guitar-ific to my ears. Sounds good with a reverb and tremolo pedal. Overdrive pedal sounds good too. The 1W/5W attenuator is helpful. The 1W is good for playing it home. On 1W at low volumes I hook up an OD pedal to get a bit o' dirt. Works fine! Lightweight, looks really nice, well built. I think for the money it's a no-brainer. You can have several options for comparable 5W amps if you buy them used. I figured I'd buy this one, try it, and if I didn't like it, return it and go used. Looks like I'm keeping it, so that says something.
This is a relatively simple tube amplifier, similar in performance to early ‘Champ’-style amps. The sound gets gritty at half volume, and has a real ‘roar’ with the volume dimed. If you are looking for high volume with high head-room, this isn’t that amp. But at lower volumes, especially in the 1 watt setting, it has a warm tube sound. Blues players, some rock, country & experimental players will enjoy this amp. Metal & jazz players may find it too limited. I’m using it for country-rock lap steel, and experimental ambient music and it seems to work well with both. I may buy another to use in stereo with my effects set-up(straight in, as the amp has no effects loop. I would also consider using the speaker-out to drive a larger cabinet. This would address the relatively low volume produced by the basic amp. I think the speaker will improve with break-in over time as it has a bit of crackle at louder volumes. Pros: One good sound—good at what it does Good for apartment practice & home recording Good for practice & small jams Good for modding Cons: low head room—clean sound rapidly disappears Lacks versatility in range of sound Recommended, with caveats
It's a cool little practice amp, and a great pedal platform. But, it can get quite rude and bark back at you: fair warning to all you bedroom players.
Sonne très bien.
You can get higher headroom for more cleans - you just need to replace the 12AX7 with a 5751. This amp is a very good deal. Personally, I'd spend the extra to get the 15w version - has real spring verb, gain/volume controls, tone controls and more.
